Why Prospects Hang Up Right After You Say the Price

By Room Two ·

Every life insurance agent knows the feeling. The video call is going well. The prospect is nodding along. Then you say the monthly price out loud, and the line goes dead. You did not lose cell service. The prospect hung up on purpose. When someone hangs up right after the quote, calling them back three times in a row rarely works. That hang up actually starts before the meeting ever begins.

Most prospects walk into a life insurance call cold. They see cheap teaser ads online, so they have no idea what real coverage costs each month. Worse, nobody asked them what monthly bill feels comfortable for their home before the meeting started. When you say a real monthly price out loud on the call, two things happen at once. First, the number shocks them. Second, nobody likes telling a stranger on camera that a price is too high. Hanging up is the fastest way out of an awkward moment on camera.

Step 1, know their budget before the call starts.

When you book the call, or the night before at the latest, you send your prospect a private intro page. On a phone, the page takes under 60 seconds to finish. Your prospect sees your photo and name, and taps four quick questions: whether their spouse or partner is joining the call, what protection goal matters most to them, what existing coverage they already have, and what monthly budget feels doable for their home. There is also an optional box where they can type their biggest worry. In a made up, fictional sample with fictional agent Jordan Miller and fictional household Terrance and Nia Brooks, Terrance taps his protection goal and his comfortable monthly budget on his intro page before the call. On the call, Jordan walks through the made up sample plan of $120,000 whole life plus $200,000 accidental death at $150 a month. Because Terrance already shared his budget, that $150 monthly price is not a cold surprise.

Step 2, put the plan in writing for the absent spouse.

Even when the monthly price fits the budget on the call, another stall happens when one spouse is missing. In our made up, fictional sample, Terrance is on the video call, but his fictional spouse Nia Brooks was not on the call. If Terrance has to repeat the whole call from memory at dinner, the reasons get lost and Nia only hears a new $150 monthly bill. After an unclosed call, Room Two helps the agent prepare a private, agent approved recap page written for the spouse who missed the meeting. In this made up sample, Nia can read why Terrance liked the plan, see the $120,000 whole life and $200,000 accidental death amounts on separate lines at $150 a month, and tap 'I'd like to explore my options' on her own time.

Step 3, ask for the referral after a sale.

The third page in the Room Two loop happens after a sale. You send your buyer a referral ask page that is free and uncounted toward your monthly pages. If your buyer names a friend, Room Two drafts a separate warm intro page that stays closed until it is agent approved by you.
